Aster Aging is seeking donations and volunteers for its annual Holiday Helpers program, which provides holiday gift bags to older adults throughout the East Valley.

The Mesa-based nonprofit distributed more than 1,200 gift bags to seniors last year and hosted hundreds of older adults at holiday luncheons. Aster said that for some recipients, the bags are the only holiday gifts they receive.

“Your support makes a profound difference,” said spokesman Jacob Newman.

“Together, we can ensure that local older adults feel remembered, valued, and cared for during the holiday season.”

The organization is collecting new, nonreligious items ranging from practical household supplies to blankets, toiletries and recreational items.

Among the requested donations are grocery and store gift cards, grabber tools, jar openers, magnifying glasses, first-aid kits, flashlights and nightlights.

Aster also is seeking blankets, nonskid socks, lotions and other toiletries, large-print puzzle books, jigsaw puzzles, calendars, packaged snacks, candy and mugs with hot chocolate or tea.

Donations of unopened dog and cat food, treats and pet toys also are being accepted through Aster’s Neighbors Pet Program, which helps older and disabled adults care for their pets.

Individuals and groups can participate by conducting gift drives or volunteering at Aster’s senior centers and holiday activities. Financial contributions also are accepted.

Donations can be delivered to Aster Aging’s administrative office, 45 W. University Drive, Suite A, Mesa. The organization also maintains an online Amazon wish list.

Aster Aging has served East Valley older adults and their families since 1979.

Its programs include Meals on Wheels, two Mesa senior centers, social services and in-home assistance.
